 Existe el consumo con el fin de satisfacer nuestras necesidades humanas más básicas. Luego está el consumo, que se utiliza para llenar supuestamente los agujeros que se han creado al no satisfacer nuestras necesidades reales. Por desgracia, para muchas personas hoy en día, casi toda su vida y su pensamiento giran en torno a vivir y satisfacer estas supuestas necesidades, sin importarles el daño que se hagan a sí mismas y/o a su entorno. Una sociedad en la que se cultiva el deseo de tener como satisfacción sustitutiva de todas las cosas que en realidad más deseamos, es decir, la cercanía a los semejantes, una actividad significativa y la oportunidad de seguir desarrollándonos, etc., es una causa importante de ello.
 Lo hayamos comprendido o no, todos somos seres humanos cuyas vidas se ven gravemente afectadas por este sistema nocivo y en constante progreso. Los efectos son siempre los mismos, a nivel individual, por ejemplo: Muerte, soledad, desnutrición, deudas, prisión o psiquiatría, adicciones relacionadas con sustancias, egocentrismo total, etc. A nivel mundial, por ejemplo, está la injusta distribución de la riqueza material, la destrucción del medio ambiente, la discriminación, la extinción de especies, las guerras por los recursos, el número de refugiados, etc. Y no estamos al final de una evolución que va cobrando impulso poco a poco.
